Usher is well-known as an R&B superstar, but now he is on a mission to teach kids financial literacy. And, he is using lessons from his three-decade-long career to impart wisdom to future generations…
Usher Raymond IV released his first studio album in 1994 at 15. As such, the performer earned and had access to significantly more money than the average teenager.
Nonetheless, Usher said in an interview with CNBC Make It that he was able to avoid the temptation to overspend.
“SURPRISINGLY, I WAS NEVER FRIVOLOUS WITH MY SPENDING. IT WASN’T UNTIL MY LATTER YEARS THAT I DECIDED TO BUY CARS AND JEWELRY AND THINGS THAT WOULD OBVIOUSLY DEPRECIATE.”
Nonetheless, the “Confessions” singer admits there were periods when he was less careful spending. But, he never let it get out of control.
Now, Usher has built a strong portfolio to create generational wealth for his kids. He has expressed that he wants his children to follow this example.
However, the musician wants to help guide more than his kids…
Usher Wants All Kids to Benefit from His Experiences
Believe it or not, the Grammy winner has been empowering young people long before he became a father himself.
He founded his non-profit organization, Usher’s New Look, to mentor high school and college students in 1999.
And, this program prioritizes financial literacy at this critical stage in life.
Usher concluded the interview about the mentorship program with this:
“I’m always trying my hardest to figure out the best solution to be able to help those people whom I know could benefit from what access I had.”
